What a Good Rent Receipt Includes

A receipt is proof that a specific payment was made for a specific period. The details that make it useful later are the date paid, the exact amount, the tenant's name, the property or address, the period the rent covers, how it was paid and a receipt number you can match to your records. Without the period, a receipt says money changed hands but not what it bought, and that is where disagreements start.

Why Receipts Matter in Ghana

This is not just good practice, it is a direct statutory requirement. Section 33 of Act 220 requires a landlord to give a written receipt at the time of payment, stating the premises, whether let furnished or unfurnished, the amount, the period it covers and the tenant's name. A mobile money or bank transfer alert shows that money moved, but not which property or which period it covered. A written receipt that names both fills that gap for the tenant and protects the landlord if a payment is ever questioned. Keep a copy of every receipt you issue, and ask for one every time you pay.

Issuing Receipts Without Retyping Every Time

Typing a receipt is fine for the odd payment. If you have several tenants, it is easier when the receipt comes from the payment record itself. In Domby, each rent payment is recorded against the tenant, with the period it covers, and on the Pro plan a numbered receipt is ready to share as an image or PDF from that record.

FAQ

What should a rent receipt include in Ghana?

At minimum: the date paid, the amount, the tenant's name, the property or address, whether it is furnished or unfurnished, the period the rent covers, the payment method, and a receipt number. Section 33 of the Rent Act 1963 (Act 220) requires the premises, furnished status, amount, period and tenant's name.

Is a MoMo or bank transfer alert enough as a receipt in Ghana?

A transfer or mobile money alert proves money moved, but it does not say what the money was for or which period it covers, and it does not meet Section 33's written receipt requirement. A receipt that names the property, furnished status and the period closes that gap, so keep both.

Is a rent receipt legally required in Ghana?

Yes. Section 33 of the Rent Act 1963 (Act 220) requires a landlord to give a written receipt at the time of every payment. It costs nothing to give one, and it protects both sides if a payment is ever disputed.

Is this rent receipt generator really free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is sent to Domby or saved. You get an image or a PDF to share or print.

Can I number my receipts?

Yes. Type your own receipt number, or leave it blank and the tool makes one from the date. Using a running number for each payment makes them easier to match to your records later.

How can I issue receipts automatically instead of typing each one?

Domby records each rent payment against the tenant and, on the Pro plan, produces a numbered receipt you can share as an image or PDF straight from the payment record.
