What a Good Rent Receipt Includes

A receipt is proof that a specific payment was made for a specific period. The details that make it useful later are the date paid, the exact amount, the tenant's name, the property or address, the period the rent covers, how it was paid and a receipt number you can match to your records. Without the period, a receipt says money changed hands but not what it bought, and that is where disagreements start.

Why Receipts Matter in Kenya

Most rent in Kenya moves by M-Pesa, which already gives both sides a confirmation message and a transaction code the moment payment goes through. That is useful, but it is not the same as a proper receipt: the M-Pesa message confirms money moved, not which property it was for or which month's rent it covers if a tenant is slightly ahead or behind. A written receipt that names the property and the period closes that gap for the tenant and protects the landlord if a payment is ever questioned. Keep a copy of every receipt you issue, and ask for one every time you pay.

Issuing Receipts Without Retyping Every Time

Typing a receipt is fine for the odd payment. If you have several tenants, it is easier when the receipt comes from the payment record itself. In Domby, each rent payment is recorded against the tenant, with the period it covers, and on the Pro plan a numbered receipt is ready to share as an image or PDF from that record. FAQ

What should a rent receipt include in Kenya?

At minimum: the date paid, the amount, the tenant's name, the property or address, the period the rent covers, the payment method, and a receipt number. It helps to add the landlord's name and signature or stamp if you print it.

Is an M-Pesa confirmation message enough as a receipt?

An M-Pesa message confirms that money moved and gives a transaction code, but it does not say which property the payment was for or which rental period it covers. A receipt that names both closes that gap, so keep both the M-Pesa message and a written receipt.

Is a rent receipt legally required in Kenya?

There is no single law demanding one for every private tenancy, but issuing a receipt for every payment is a basic landlord obligation in practice and is what a tenant needs as proof they paid. It costs nothing to give one, and it protects both sides if a payment is ever disputed.

Is this rent receipt generator really free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is sent to Domby or saved. You get an image or a PDF to share or print.

Can I number my receipts?

Yes. Type your own receipt number, or leave it blank and the tool makes one from the date. Using a running number for each payment makes them easier to match to your records later.

How can I issue receipts automatically instead of typing each one?

Domby records each rent payment against the tenant and, on the Pro plan, produces a numbered receipt you can share as an image or PDF straight from the payment record.
