What a Good Rent Receipt Includes

A receipt is proof that a specific payment was made for a specific period. The details that make it useful later are the date paid, the exact amount, the tenant's name, the property or address, the period the rent covers, how it was paid and a receipt number you can match to your records. Without the period, a receipt says money changed hands but not what it bought, and that is where disagreements start.

Why Receipts Matter in South Africa

The Rental Housing Act 50 of 1999 goes further than most tenants realise: Section 5(3)(a)-(b) requires a landlord to furnish a written, dated receipt for every payment, specifying the property address, what the payment is for, and the period it covers. An EFT confirmation or a bank app notification shows that money moved, but not automatically what it was for or which rental period it settles. A proper receipt closes that gap, protects the tenant as proof of payment, and protects the landlord if a payment is ever questioned.

Issuing Receipts Without Retyping Every Time

Typing a receipt is fine for the odd payment. If you have several tenants, it is easier when the receipt comes from the payment record itself. In Domby, each rent payment is recorded against the tenant, with the period it covers, and on the Pro plan a numbered receipt is ready to share as an image or PDF from that record.

FAQ

What should a rent receipt include in South Africa?

At minimum: the date paid, the amount, the tenant's name, the property address, the period the rent covers, the payment method, and a receipt number. This matches what the Rental Housing Act itself requires a landlord to provide.

Is a landlord legally required to give a rent receipt in South Africa?

Yes. Section 5(3)(a)-(b) of the Rental Housing Act 50 of 1999 requires a written, dated receipt for every payment received, stating the property address, what the payment is for, and the period it covers.

Is an EFT confirmation enough as a receipt?

An EFT confirmation proves money moved, but it doesn't say what it was for or which rental period it covers. A proper receipt naming the property and the period closes that gap, so keep both.

Is this rent receipt generator really free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is sent to Domby or saved. You get an image or a PDF to share or print, with the amount shown in Rand.

Can I number my receipts?

Yes. Type your own receipt number, or leave it blank and the tool makes one from the date. Using a running number for each payment makes them easier to match to your records later.

How can I issue receipts automatically instead of typing each one?

Domby records each rent payment against the tenant and, on the Pro plan, produces a numbered receipt you can share as an image or PDF straight from the payment record.
